HO Scale KCSt.L&C JW Bowker 2-4-0 Steam Locomotive & Tender – Tested / Runs #1 Two years ago, my father passed and I received the remnants of his HO Scale train collection, consisting of a diesel locomotive, several switchers, a beat-up steam locomotive and a collection of track and some freight cars. From that collection I found one locomotive, a Virginia & Truckee Railroad Genoa 4-4-0 which required repairs and restoration, and it showed me that these trains can be repaired, refurbished, and restored to operational condition for many more years of enjoyment by model railroad enthusiasts…without having to pay hundreds of dollars for the newer models. Since then, I have searched for damaged, non-functional steam locomotives of the 2-4-0 and 4-4-0 configurations to repair and restore. In this way, I honor my father and attempt to pass on his love for model railroading to others who search for these vintage locomotives. Part of my enjoyment comes from the completion of these locomotives, taking them from the damage states I receive them in, back to being functional, operating locomotives that people can add to their personal collections and use for years to come. This is one of those. So what are you getting? The K.C.St.L.& C. Railroad JW Bowker is a 2-4-0 design released by Rivarossi. This version is different from the Virginia & Truckee one. While it retains the same design, it was assembled differently. First and foremost, this version mounts the motor in the Engineering cabin rather than in the tender car. So while the tender car features a coupler to join with additional freight cars, it is mainly decorative and does not hold the same purpose as the tender car with the motor mounted inside. The K.C.St.L.& C. versions also has plastic features rather than the metal ones. The domes atop the boiler, as well as the air-brake canisters behind the pilot are made from plastic instead of metal. The details along the boiler are also less detailed than the VTRR version. The K.C.St.L.&C. version is different in that the design along the side of the tender car is different from the VTRR version. To be clear…you are receiving a locomotive and tender set, tested and functional (see video). When I received this piece, it needed work. Most obvious, the front pilot was badly damaged requiring it to be removed and filed down to the base. Luckily, I had a pilot that I acquired from Precision Scale Company (PSC), and online company that provides detailed metal and plastic replacement parts for various model locomotives. It was a metal (brass) pilot similar to the original one. With a little sanding with a Dremel, some filing for fine details, and some buffing of the pilot, I sealed the pilot to the base and it came out nicely! Admittedly, it is off just a hair, but does not impair the function of the locomotive when in motion. Next, the metal railings were buffed to clean them up. They were reattached to the boiler and set in place. I disassembled the locomotive to reveal the gear which needed cleaning to remove dirt, grease and other stuff that was in the gear. After the cleaning, I lubricated the gear, the metal pieces were buffed to help with the electrical connections and aid in power, then it was reassembled to the boiler and tested. The results were very surprising as evidenced in the video above. The locomotive runs well, both forward and in reverse, and is very fast. Q-tips were used with water to clean off dust and dirt accumulated on the body of the locomotive and tender car and then the axles were buffed to improve electrical connections. To be sure, the locomotive has some rough spots, but nothing that keeps it from being a great part of anyone’s collection. The locomotive and tender are not perfect. It was apparent from inspection that there was some wear and minor flaws which included the following:Front pilot replaced as noted above. The new metal pilot has been sealed to the front of the locomotive as shown in the photos.The front inserts of the railings on either side of the boiler chipped the plastic holes but are still good.The step on the right side underneath of the Engineering cabin was broken off. I pulled one from a damaged locomotive to replace it. It isn’t perfect, but it is in place and sealed.Only the step on the right rear of the tender car remains. The other three were broken off. Also, only the left rear step on the back of the tender car remains.The bell on the first dome atop the boiler is missing, and the whistle on the back dome is missing.Some good things to note:When powered up for testing, locomotive responds immediately (see video) in forward and reverse and moves FAST!Railings along the top of the tender car are present. The one of the right side cracked but is still complete.Clean details along the sides of the tender car.This version does NOT require a drive shaft since the motor is in the locomotive portion.
